I always struggle with milk production as soon as my baby is around eight months. It happened with my daughter and now with my son. As with my daughter, I turned to my old favorite, fenugreek. Yes, it does make me smell like maple syrup, but it worked. However, I wanted to try something new. I don't know about you, but sometimes I just don't feel like popping ten pills a day.

When I mentioned my supply issues to a friend, she told me about this new cookie that is supposed to increase milk supply. Of course, I had to check it out. I googled "breast milk cookies" and discovered Milkmakers.

How does it work? These cookies contain three special ingredients to help increase milk production - oats, brewers yeast, and flax seed. The Milkmakers website boasts that eating only one or two a day has shown to increase milk production. So, of course, I placed an order and was amazed with how great they tasted {I ordered the oatmeal chocolate chip}. I also saw results! So, if you are looking for a quick boost, check out Milkmakers cookies. I think you {and your baby} will be happy!

I am busy mentally {and physically} getting myself ready to have a third child. Does it really take that much mental preparation you might ask? If you've had the type of pregnancies I have had, you would know the answer to that question.

The easiest part of that preparation is picking out products and clothes for this aspirational baby #3 {okay, maybe that's not part of it, but it's fun anyway}. I was excited to stumble across a new brand/type of baby bottle called Bare Bottles.

I am a huge proponent of breastfeeding, but every mommy
needs a break every now and then {and daddy wants to participate too}.
So I'm always on the lookout for bottles that support breastfeeding.
The other feature I look for is a bottle that successfully reduces or eliminates the amount of air the baby takes in. There is nothing that drives
sleep-deprived parents to new depths than colic. Indeed, I don't even
utter the c-word in my house during those first 3 months.

They are not on the market yet, but these Bare Bottles sound as if they will meet all of my {and baby #3's} need. The diagram above shows how the Bare Bottle nipple is more like a breast than most bottles. And they claim to have created "air-free feeding"! If they live up to all of their claims, this sounds like the mother of all bottles {and they are cute too!}. But we'll let baby trip be the judge.☺

I simply love looking at beautiful clothes. Last year, my husband and I took my daughter to the National Museum of American History in Washington DC. The museum had an entire room dedicated to showing all the gowns that were worn by the First Ladies. Needless to say, I would have been quite happy spending my entire time in that room while my husband wanted to check out, as you would expect, the sports and leisure room.

Given this slight obsession with cute clothes, I, naturally, am always looking for cute clothes for my daughter. Last year, I stumbled upon a line that I fell in love with and I continue to stalk Zulily waiting for one of their sales. The line is called Red Fish Clothing. Their website provides the best description of their clothing line:

Designed and constructed for growth, movement, and versatility, the simple lines of Redfish Kids Clothing are easily layered and worn together. Using durable, pre-washed materials, Redfish Kids Clothing satisfies kids need for comfort while addressing mom's need for durability, design and value.

This description basically says it all. But, let me add that what I love most about this line is the shapes, fit, and use of color. The "Party Dress" is a perfect example of everything I love about their collection:

L.O.V.E.

I just returned from {a much needed} vacation and I now can truly say...I love my stroller. Not just love, in love, infatuated, soul-mated to my stroller. I once {back in '07} thought I was in love...with a Bugaboo. But now I know that was merely young lust. Once you've mated with a stroller, you know all those that came before it were simply a distraction. Love like this doesn't come around every day {well, until the next great stroller comes out.}

Okay, okay enough with the metaphors. Here is what sold me, and has kept me, in love with my CityMini. And if you are a parent, a grandparent or even a caretaker, you will understand why I fell hard for this one:

Perfection!

If you've ever struggled to close any stroller with packages in one hand, or a screaming baby in another hand, or both, you'll understand how beautiful the CityMini's quick close feature is.

As I was waiting to go through customs after a 5+ hour flight home, trying to corral my sleep deprived 4 year old, hold my completely knocked out 1.5 year old and make sure our luggage wasn't picked off, I folded and unfolded {just as amazing} this bad boy too many times to count. And every time I was able to flick it open and close and move in and out of places, I fell deeper and deeper in love.
The Tegu Story from Tegu on Vimeo.

I found these guys on Open Sky {one of my new addictions} and after watching the video above I instantly fell in love with their story and products. I am always on the hunt for non-plastic or recyclable/eco-friendly toys and ones not made in China {no offense to the Chinese, but they know what kinds of products they are making}.

These toys fit both of these requirements. And, to sweeten the purchase, for every toy you buy, Tegu
will plant 12 trees in Honduras or fund one day of school for a child
who would otherwise work on a trash dump near Tegucigalpa. The products are simple. But simple is best for little ones. It helps ignite their imagination and unleash creativity. Wooden blocks are a staple for any kids toy box, but even more so when they are young like my little ones {1 and 4}. It can be quite frustrating when they fall over so easily!

Tegu's blocks fix that little problem because each piece is magnetized. So after your little one has concentrated so hard to build the best castle possible, it won't be instantly ruined when his/her little brother/sister comes and tries to knock it down {we call Little J the Block Monster}

Watch the video, it's a must see. Check out their products. And buy a gift that won't just end up as another toy box casualty.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750944880477284606.post-17146450590770886292011-12-02T06:06:00.000-08:002011-12-22T08:55:51.083-08:00Baby It's Cold Outside

It is finally starting to feel like Winter. In some ways, I love the thought of wearing cute coats with matching scarves and hats while drinking a Starbucks Eggnog Latte. However, I do miss the ease of dashing out of the house without having to worry about outerwear. And, without worrying about keeping my son warm. My daycare provider recently reminded me that it is probably a good idea to dress my son in shoes or booties to keep his feet warm. So, it is time to retire the cute Trumpette socks and invest in some cute baby booties. When I had my daughter, I loved the Zutano booties. All kinds of books. Small ones and big ones. True ones and fiction ones. Books with pictures and books with words. I love them all, every book, every word.

I've been a consumer of books my whole life, well at least since I could read/hold a book. So it's only fitting that I pass this obesession on to my kids. My dream is to build them a library of books that they can cherish and come back to even when they are older and have outgrown Good Night Moon and Peekaboo Morning.

So I am always on the hunt for a great book to read to my kids {and now that my oldest has begun reading, books that he can read to himself}. Right now, I'm definitely partial to books written in rhyme. It just makes it much more enjoyable to read over and over and over and over {you have a bazillion books, why do we have to read It's Lovely When You Smile AGAIN?!?}

But there are so so many children's books out there: from board books to picture books, from classics to new creations. It's really hard to know where to start or end. So I was excited to find this yearly list of the "Best Baby Books" by the Fred Rogers Company {yes, that Fred Rogers a/k/a/ Mr. Rogers}. We try as hard a possible to capture, record, memorialize all of the special moments. But being a mommy to 1, 2, 3 or more little ones does not leave you with the luxury of leisurely writing in and designing a baby book. And if you're like me, your smartphone, tablet, laptop is usually a lot closer when these memories occur than that beautifully embroidered keepsake book gathering dust in the top of your little one's closet.

I soooo want to be the mommy who has a beautiful book that includes all of my little ones' firsts and special keepsakes. But alas, I'm up to baby number 2 and haven't even gotten past 4 months in my book for baby number 1.

That is why I LOVE the concept behind MyOwnLittleStory. They claim to be the "only on-line baby book with email reminders". Sounds good to me, but I haven't come across any with non-email reminders so..hey...ok. But what I think is great about them is that:

♥ you can design and create a book for free {yes, free!}. That way if you start working on it, with all the best of intentions, you're not out 25, 50, 75 bucks if you don't quite complete the project;

♥ the interface is so user-friendly and they even give you prompts {on each page and via email} so you don't have to come up with what to include on each page;

♥ your book can be as long or as short as you want; and

♥ best of all, you can upload pictures to your book! What I lack in book creation, I more than make up for in photographic memory creation. I have gigabytes of photos of my boys. Cheese was {and likely will be} both of their first words.
The only catch is what the book looks like after you print it. That's where the money comes in, but the prices are reasonable. Unfortunately, they don't give you a lot of detail about what the finished product will look like, or better yet show you detailed samples of finished book. It would be very helpful for me to see how moms who are really good at this wrote in and designed their books.

If nothing else, I have an easy and highly accessible place to record the memories until I get around to actually figuring out the book creation process. Which is.....Priceless.

Okay, maybe not $1000, but at least half. The Sony Alpha NEX-3 is just awesome. When my son was born we purchased a Canon DSLR. I love to take photographs, but I hated the slow shutter speed of the pocket digital cameras {at the time}. I knew that to really capture infants and small children, you need very fast response time. So we splurged and and purchased the big bulky DSLR and I haven't regretted the purchase to this day.

What I do long for is the size of the pocket cameras. When you have 2 kids and all the myriad things that come with them, the last thing you can afford to add to it is a big, bulky, fragile camera. But I've done it, it's just not fun. And I've missed a lot of photographic opportunities solely because I didn't have enough hands {or energy} to pull out my DSLR.

This Christmas I was helping my mom pick a gift for my dad. Now, he's still using a Cybershot from 2000. Needless, to say, it's slooowww. But as I looked for a new flicker, I stumbled across Smile Shutter from Sony. It's on a number of their cameras, but I liked it best paired with the Sony Alpha NEX-3. The Smile Shutter, when enabled, makes the camera take a picture when the subjects smile.

This is incredibly useful when your subjects are little people who smile quickly and out of the blue. So I was eager to try it out on Christmas Day. Unfortunately, that did not happen because Sony does not include memory sticks with their cameras {can we say cheap! geez}. A few days later, after I received the memory stick from Amazon I took the Alpha NEX-3 out for a click. The results were so wonderful!

My seven month old is the most adorable little one ever {yes, I'm biased} and looks even more amazing when he smiles. But it's difficult to catch him cracking one. I'm always so busy trying to get him to smile, I often miss the smiles or catch them on the tail end. But with the Smile Shutter set, I just held up the camera while I made funny noises and faces trying to get my little one to smile. And just as advertised, as soon as he flashed his pearly 2 whites, the shutter snapped. The picture is the best one I have and I can't wait to take many many more.
I recently moved to Washington, DC and while I was born and raised in this area, I have been in New York for so long now I feel like a New Yorker. So, returning to this area has been a huge adjustment.

Like any good New Yorker {read snob}, I think every other city is just not good enough. The restaurants are not as good. The shopping's not as good. The people aren't as interesting {read rude}.

For an urban-mom like me that includes the baby boutiques, activities and Mommy and Me groups. Will they be as trendy? Will there be tons of activities to choose from? Will I even want to join any of the groups?

Well the answer to the first question at least is a resounding Yes! I know that Georgetown has always been a generally cool place to shop, but I didn't know Capitol Hill was so fab! I particularly love the row of family-friendly shops near Eastern Market and especially Dawn Price Baby. They have all of the best baby gear, clothing and gifts that you could want. Her taste is impeccable. I strolled through their Capitol Hill shop thinking "I like that, and that and that and that, ooh and that too!" So, of course, I had to pick up a few things that I needed {eehhm yes needed} for my little ones -- French flash cards, mitten clips and an über cute cable knit outfit.

If you are a NYC-transplant in the DC area, be sure to check out Dawn Price Baby. And for a few minutes you may forget that you're strolling the shops in our nation's capital and think you've just stumbled across a cute new baby boutique in SoHo.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750944880477284606.post-79870229420084670622010-12-08T19:07:00.000-08:002010-12-08T19:08:03.521-08:00It's A Dirty Job

It's kinda gross, but during this marathon cold season, it's my most prized possession.

One of the hardest aspects of having a little one {and there are a lot of them} is dealing with colds. When my children were infants I worked really hard to get them as old as possible before they caught their first cold -- i.e., being a sanitizer nazi, refusing to let people get too near, much less touch, them when they were really young, etc. Because NOTHING is worse than a congested newborn. I do mean nothing.

Yes, there is the aspirator, but really who wants to stick that big bulby, sticky thing up that precious, moving target of a nose {they learn really quickly to start squirming when they see the thing coming}. In fact, I swear I remember that thing my from my own childhood; and believe me the memories are not fond.

That's why I love love LOVE the SNOT SUCKER 2000 {not the real name, but that's what I call it}. This nasal aspirator is ridiculously simple, but so effective. Particularly when you are attempting to remove snot {don't you just love that word!} by yourself from an uncooperative little human. I used to have my husband hold their heads while I tried to suck out the snot, but not anymore!

Oh and yes it seems gross that you are literally sucking the snot with your mouth, but trust me, it doesn't get anywhere close to your mouth. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750944880477284606.post-90251242096070481772010-11-18T15:22:00.000-08:002010-11-18T15:22:32.435-08:00Return of the Spunky child

Now that I have two children, my wardrobe has become increasingly static. Any money allotted in our budget for clothing goes exclusively to our kiddos who are growing like weeds. So I feed the shopping fiend within by outfitting my kids in cute clothing that they need {need, yeah need}.

There are soooooo many on-line kids boutiques out now claiming to offer stylish/posh/couture/one-of-a kind/[fill in the unique blank], but so few live up to their claim. Spunky Sprout, however, delivers. They have soooo many cute things, and for boys too! I have barely begun to scratch the surface of all they have to offer. Now we have 2 and no longer have the luxury of live-in family help. So we are faced with the scenario that many working couples are facing, getting a nanny.

Once you get past the research, interviews and selection process and have settled on someone who {hopefully} seems perfect, the question invariably comes up "Should we get a nanny cam?" I mean this is a person you likely don't know at all -- except for what she has told you and what you may have heard from others -- who is going to be looking after your most precious treasure(s). It makes sense that you want to check-in on her. Of course my fear is, what if you see something that you don't like, but it isn't a fireable offense. You can't bring it up but it will eat you up just knowing about it. To know or not to know, that is the question.

In case you are in the "To know!" category, there are some great devices out there that you can rig up in your home and watch from anywhere {work, a restaurant, the spa, the mall}. Some, like the ones below, can be disguised as clocks, teddy bears, or stuck in small areas. Others, like the Avaak Vue Personal Video Network, aren't shaped like a decoy, but can easily be hidden anywhere. The Vue is the easiest and simplest nanny cam I've found. There is no software to load and you can view the cameras from any internet browser. It’s really that simple!
All of sudden he doesn't seem to be satisfied any more, eats more often, has more than doubled her birth weight, and chews hungrily while looking on as you gobble down your food {in between feedings}. He may even seem to try to grab your fork every once in awhile.

All of these are signs that the time has arrived for your babies palette to expand. No it doesn't mean she can start eating cheeseburgers and french fries, but it does mean that it's time to break out the starter food.

And if you want {and have the time} to give your baby the best, then homemade baby food is in order. It's not as difficult as it sounds. In fact, even my friends who can barely boil water have become consummate baby food makers. That's because babies are easy! They haven't developed the sophisticated palette that we have. They are happy with simple, wholesome, natural ingredients.

If you're still reading this in a daze and don't believe you can do it {or have time to do it} then you'll love Annabel Karmel's Top 100 Baby Purees baby food book. And when you add in all the new found baby food making gadgets that are now on the market -- Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker, Reusable Baby Food Containers -- you'll feel like the next [fill in your favorite celebrity chef name]!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750944880477284606.post-1664240325945432742010-10-11T19:12:00.000-07:002011-12-15T18:17:38.790-08:00And then there were 2!

I just got a double stroller and was so excited about it......and then I saw this one. The City Select by Baby Jogger is so friggin' awesome!! It is amazing how many ways it can be configured {at least 16 as far as I can tell}. It basically is the answer to the few complaints I have with my double stroller: it's too big when I only have 1 kid or only 1 kid wants to be in the stroller; I want to use my bassinet AND be able to have the older 1 in the stroller. And what about when baby #3 comes along and baby #2 is still in a car seat too! The City Select is the answer to every parent's dream!

Okay, I'll admit the price tag is pretty insane {especially when you factor in all the optional accessories}. But if you have more than 1 kid the price of this stroller is as much as or less than all the different sized strollers you will accumulate trying to find the right combo that will fit your life. Too bad I already have all of those strollers because I now have no excuse to get one....sighAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750944880477284606.post-48401169067639625852010-10-01T13:16:00.000-07:002011-12-15T18:15:52.875-08:00Itzbeen three minutes since I last fed him and he's hungry again!

Between sleep deprivation, food preparation, household maintenance and general mommy-brain, it's sometimes really difficult to remember how long ago you fed, bathed, changed or put to sleep your baby. Especially in the early days when you seem to feed and change your little one every 3 minutes. Throw in a few older siblings and it's a wonder how you keep your sanity.

That's why I love this little device {and not just because I love all gadgets} because it took one thing off my plate, having to remember when I last fed/changed my little one. If he was fussy I could quickly determine if he might be hungry, sleepy or possibly wet just by looking at my little Itzbeen timer! {Of course he could've pooped right after I changed him, so it's not full proof for those circumstances}

Of course the only downside is that it's as small as a large cell phone and just like a cell phone it can be easily misplaced. And with mommy-brain who knows where/when you will find it again if you lose it!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1750944880477284606.post-80380969503979405662010-09-30T11:31:00.000-07:002010-09-30T11:31:05.594-07:00Let little girls be little girls

I have two little boys and I am obsessed with little girls clothes. I especially love girls clothes that are different/original. If I had a little girl she would definitely stand out {and wouldn't look like a miniature teenager...hate those grown up clothes for little girls}.
I spotted one of their sundresses on a little girl in music class and I just fell in love. I even love their cute little labels {nice and big so I could tell who made the fab little dress}. I even love their name!

So if I am blessed to have a little girl next time around {third times a charm!} this will be my first stop....maybe I should buy a dress now just because...just in case ;-)
So I really love Fill In The Blankie. They make great, keepsake blankets that include extensive personalization in the cost {you not only can include a name and date, but a message/saying too...all 4 sides of the blanket!}.

I've purchased 2 blankets from them for my sons' infant Dedications -- the As Good As It Gets and the Martha's Majesty -- and was super pleased. I also purchased one as a gift and the mom is still talking about how wonderful the blanket is. I just wish I could afford to get one for each milestone in my kids lives {okay maybe not high school graduation, but at least while they are babies☺}!
As a result the "sleep sack" has emerged and taken the baby world by storm. {I really think those same doctors must have a stake in baby sacks} There are LOTS of sacks out there made of different material. But they are all visually pretty much the same. Or so I thought.

Olli & Lime realized that like all your baby's wear, you want their sleep wear to be cool and fashion forward as well. Boring, plain cotton with typical bears, trains or lions just won't do. So if you are a trendy urban parent, with a circular wooden crib, you will just love what Olli & Lime has done for sleep sacks. And if you want to take it a step further, they offer coordinating nursery decor too!
Why? Because I cannot have it. I reached {okay surpassed} my diaper bag limit before I found this one. But it is so wonderfully perfect! Why did I not see it sooner ?!?! It's large and roomy, perfect for all the burp cloths, bottles, toys, binkies, change of clothes, snacks, sanitizer, napkins, disposable bags, oh and your stuff too. AND it's sooo cute! The Zanzibar print is my favorite. It looks like a bag you would actually WANT to carry. Did I mention that it is reversible! I. have. to. have. it. Maybe if I lost {yeah lost} one of mine, I would need to find a replacement. Hmmm. To be cont.....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12708075250083593093noreply@blogger.com0
